Middletown to celebrate ‘Police Week’ May 12-18

The Township of Middletown will celebrate national "Police Week" May 12-18. Police Chief John F. Pollinger invites community members, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, civic groups, students and senior citizens to visit police headquarters during the week.

Guided tours of the facility will be conducted May 10-16 from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., and May 17 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Headquarters is at 1 Kings Highway.

Holmdel educators named teachers of year

Four Holmdel teachers have been named 2002 New Jersey "Teacher of the Year" for their respective schools. Rian Lane, Alana Lazar, Darcy Kolodziej and Barbara Weinshenker were informed of the decision by Superintendent of Schools Leigh Byron.

The women were nominated for exceptional contributions in using effective instructional techniques and methods, establishing a productive classroom climate and rapport with students, and developing feelings of self-worth and love of learning in their students.

Art teacher Rian Lane has taught at the Village School the past three years. She was nominated for developing an appreciation of art among students, as well as enhancing the computer art program by redefining projects and more closely aligning them with the art curriculum for grades K-2. Lane, a graduate of Rowan University, Glassboro, was also honored by the N.J. Association for Educational Technology.

Lazar has taught art at Indian Hill School the past four years and has been in the district 15 years. The teacher of fine arts was given the Outstanding Art Teacher K-12 2000 award by the International Sculpture Center. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and New York University, respectively.

Kolodziej has been a physical education teacher at the William R. Satz School the pat six years. She has been involved at the state level for alcohol- and drug- awareness programs for students, and peer leadership programs, and is also recognized for coaching abilities for the Satz track team and the Holmdel High School swim team. She is a graduate of Cook College at Rutgers University, New Brunswick.

Weinshenker has taught math at Holmdel High School for 22 years, and her advanced placement calculus students consistently attain the score of five on the AP exams and receive credit for two semesters of college calculus. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Brooklyn College, and Georgian Court College, Lakewood, respectively.

Premier Theatre

auditions May 16-18

The Premier Theatre Company, Manasquan, will hold auditions for its 17th season May 16 and 17 at 7 p.m., and May 18 at 10 a.m. at Henderson Theatre, 850 Route 520, Lincroft section of Middletown. Children’s auditions (eighth grade and younger) will be May 23 at 7 p.m.

Needed are adult and teen-age singers, actors, actresses. The company’s season will feature Camelot, Evita, Me and My Girl, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Footloose, Hello Dolly!, Cabaret and The Sound of Music.

‘Muzzy’ now available

at Middletown library

The Middletown Township Library, 55 New Monmouth Road, has announced the BBC learning course for children, "Muzzy," is now available at the library.

The "Muzzy" method consists of five videos, two audiocassettes, and one CD-ROM; the entire package may be borrowed. The method is a see-listen-and-learn method to teach children a foreign language. The library is starting out with Spanish.

The library has also received a grant to purchase "positive parenting" materials, such as books and videos to expand the library’s collection and establish a core collection in the three Middletown branches. The grand was awarded by the New Jersey State Library.

Great Race proceeds for scholarships top $31,000

The organizing committee of "The Great Race," together with the Middletown Township Education Foundation (MTEA), has announced that net proceeds from the event totaled $31,700.

All proceeds will be used for scholarships for Middletown children who lost a parent in the attacks Sept. 11. Normally, half the proceeds go to the Middletown Township Education Foundation to fund grants for district teachers, with the other half distributed to the PTAs and PFAs at the district’s 17 schools.

Additional contributions raised the total funds available for scholarships to $44,000. Contributors included the Lincroft Girl Scout Troop No. 1120, Ryan Kappauf of New Berlin, N.Y., the MTEA, and the Middletown Township Education Founda-tion.

The 13th annual great race will be Oct. 19 at Middletown High School South.
