The Allentown United U14 (co-ed) soccer team extended its Jersey Coast unbeaten streak to 16 matches with a pair of victories last week: a 5-1 decision over the Pineland Falcons and a 2-1 win against the Twin County Terminators. The wins upped the United’s season mark to 6-0-1 and sets up a terrific contest this Saturday at noon, when United visits the undefeated (7-0-0) Lacey Raiders.

Threatening skies and a soggy turf didn’t slow United’s offense as forward Nate Cornell (three goals) and halfback Thomas Barkley (two goals) provided all the scoring in the rescheduled Thursday evening victory over the Falcons. Sweeper Kevin Pope, stopper Ben Koontz and halfback Nick Monticello anchored the defense as United continued to effectively limit shots by the opposition. A bright, sunny Patriots Park was the setting for Saturday’s home match against the Terminators. The contest was a nail biter throughout as United’s defense made two goals by striker Brian Pereira standup. Fullbacks Dimitria Papageorge and Liva Glover, and stopper Zach Strobino made the difference on defense against a swarming and relentless Terminators’ attack. The highlight of the match was a missed penalty kick by the Terminators late in the second half that hit the crossbar and was cleared by the Allentown defense. Forwards Jen Taylor and Jonathan Mumpower also played effective offense.

The Allentown United U11 travel soccer team played two matches last week. The United lost 4-1 to the Lakewood Lazers in a hard-fought, physical match. Bryan Pope scored the lone goal for the United who were missing three players for this important match. The second game of the week was played against the Pinelands Dragons at Patriots Park. The United got back on track with an impressive 3-1 victory over a determined Pinelands squad. The United goals were scored by Dean Search, Hayley Odell and Matt Frein. The superb United defense was led by Danny Bailey, Kevin Bux and Haley Wilhelm. The Pinelands offensive line pressed the attack only to be rebuffed by the tough United backfield time after time. The United now have a record of 5-2 on the season. The next match will be against the Toms River Dynomites this Saturday in Toms River.
