Playwrights return with ‘Night at the Nutcracker’

Playwrights Billy Van Zandt and Jane Milmore will again return to Monmouth County, as they have since 1979, to premiere original plays using local actors and designers. Van Zandt, Milmore and their Unofficial Repertory Company will be at the performing arts center at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft section of Middletown, May 24- June 1.

The group will premiere the musical comedy A Night at the Nutcracker. The crazy version of The Nutcracker will feature physical gags, slapstick comedy, one-liners, puns, chases, beautiful girls and new musical numbers.

Van Zandt and Milmore are the authors/stars of 19 original plays and are also Emmy nominees and People’s Choice Award winners. The duo developed the original pilot of the TV show Suddenly Susan and authored the forthcoming film Whacking Grandma.

The musical is co-sponsored by Brookdale’s office of student life and activities and the performing arts center. Performances are May 24 at 8 p.m. (followed by a reception with the actors), May 25 and June 1 at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., May 30 at 8 p.m. (followed by a question-and-answer session with the cast), and May 31 at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $20, and $15 for seniors and Brookdale students with valid identification for all Friday and Saturday evening performances. Matinee performances, including the question-and-answer session, cost $15.

Registration under way for Hazlet rec. classes

Registration is now under way for Hazlet Recreation’s karate lessons for children to begin May 18 and be held Mondays from 4-5 p.m., and Saturdays from 10-11 a.m.

Cost is $30 for the 10 classes. A uniform may be purchased for $25 ($40 value) from Amato’s Studio, Palmer Avenue, also site of classes.

Registration is also being accepted for acrylic art classes for children age 7 and older. The five lessons will be held Mondays from 3:30-5 p.m. beginning May 20. Fee is $30. Registration for adult art classes is now under way. The Monday lessons will run five weeks beginning May 20 from 7-8:30 p.m.

Registration for all the above will be accepted through May 17. A $5 late fee will apply after that date. All art classes will be at the James J. Cullen Center, 1776 Union Ave.

A bus trip to the New York City Ballet performance of A Midsummer’s Night Dream at Lincoln Center will be June 29 at 5 p.m. Cost is $56 for transportation and ticket. A bus trip to a performance of My Fair Lady at Paper Mill Playhouse, Millburn, will be July 6 at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $45 for transportation and ticket. Buses for both trips will depart the overflow parking lot at the Hazlet Library, 251 Middle Road.

The commission is currently offering discounted amusement park tickets. Price is for tickets only, and not for group trips and transportation.

Adult tickets offered are: Great Adventure Theme Park, Jackson, $31; Hurricane Harbor, $28; and Hershey Park, Hershey, Pa., $28.

Register for ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ trip by June 12

The Aberdeen Township Recreation Department will offer a trip to Singin’ in the Rain at Three Little Bakers Dinner Theatre and Country Club, Wilmington, Del., Aug. 15. The trip is open to Aberdeen residents age 55 and older.

Buses will depart the A&P, Route 35, Cliffwood section of Aberdeen, at 8 a.m., and the parking lot of Temple Shalom, Ayrmont Lane and Church Street, Aberdeen, at 8:30 a.m. Buses will return at approximately 7 p.m.

Cost is $38 for nonresidents, and $33 for residents. Registration deadline is June 12, and nonresidents may sign up after the resident deadline, space permitting. The trip will also feature a buffet luncheon and theater admission. For more information, call (732) 583-4200, ext. 129.

Chorus’ ‘Serenade for Strings’ June 1

The Monmouth Civic Chorus, Red Bank, will present Mozart’s "Serenade for Strings" June 1 at 8 p.m. at Holmdel High School, Crawfords Corner Road.

Tickets are $25, $20 for seniors and students, and $15 for groups of 10 or more. A $2 discount will apply for tickets ordered before May 21.

Conducting the concert which includes the N.J. Chamber Singers children’s chorus, will be Mark Shapiro. The concert will include the premiere of "Songs of Love and War," a lyrical setting of letters to and from American soldiers.

‘StrokeAlert!’ scheduled at center May 23

The American Stroke Association, in recognition of Stroke Awareness Month, will hold its seventh annual "StrokeAlert!" May 23 at Bayshore Community Hospital, 727 N. Beers St., Holmdel.

The program will feature free assessments and screenings for stroke. Reservations are necessary for the program.
