Phone book collection drive to begin June 1

The Monmouth County Planning Board and Verizon will again sponsor a summer telephone book drive to collect old phone books for recycling. New phone books will be delivered in late May-July in Monmouth County.

Residents may bring their old phone books to the Middletown Township Recycling Center, Kanes Lane, June 1 to Aug. 31. Recycling Center hours are Monday-Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Anyone in the county who is interested in the program should call their municipality to see if there is a local program in place.

Lil’ Romeo to perform

at Brookdale College

Brookdale Community College, Lincroft section of Middletown, will present Lil’ Romeo in concert June 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Brookdale’s gymnasium.

Lil’ Romeo’s debut single, "My Baby," hit No. 1 on three Billboard charts after just two weeks. He will soon release his second album, and has also contributed to the soundtrack music from the movie Scooby-Doo.

Earth Day celebrated with tree planting

The Hazlet Township Environmental Commission sponsored its annual Earth Day celebration by planting a ceremonial tree, a pawpaw, and distributing pine saplings and speckled seedlings to those in attendance.

Attendees included Mayor Christopher G. Cullen on behalf of the Township Committee, Commission members, and Girl Scouts from Troops No. 742 and 217, Daisy Troop 934, and Brownie Troop 301, all Hazlet.

The Hazlet Township Environmental Commission meets the first Monday of each month at 8 p.m. at Hazlet Township town hall at 319 Middle Road. The public is invited to attend. For more information on the commission or Natco Park, call town hall at (732) 264-1700.

Cholesterol screening, workshop at library

Matawan Aberdeen Public Library, 165 Main St., Matawan, will offer a cholesterol screening June 5 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Registration is preferred for the free screening to be given by Eileen Frankel, a nurse form Bayshore Health Alliance.

A free workshop on college financial planning will be June 6 at 7 p.m. at the library. Registration is required for the program to be given by Chuck Drawbaugh, president of College Funding Associates, Middletown.
