mark Cinco de Mayo

The second-grade classes at the Ella G. Clarke School in Lakewood celebrated Cinco de Mayo recently with a fiesta under the direction of elementary Spanish teacher Alice Singer. Parents and children prepared a variety of Spanish and Latin American dishes, including chiles, taquitos, enchiladas and numerous rice dishes. Flags of Mexico adorned the second grade classes. In addition, a program of Spanish songs, dances, poems and skits was presented on May 21. Students in grades two, three and four performed the presentation in the school auditorium.

Students’ work gains

mention in newspaper

The Lakewood Middle School chapter of the National Junior Art Honor Society recently was honored by having its work noted in the spring 2002 issue of the Honor Society Newspaper. Because of the work of teacher and sponsor Linda Sloan, the students raised money (through the sale of an original art calendar) to visit the Princeton Art Museum. They have also been working on rescue surfboard logo designs for the town of Spring Lake. The designs were based on a theme of an American flag. Continued projects include helping to coordinate a district-wide art show which was held May 29.

Youngsters present

‘Three Piggy Opera’

Barbara D. Ippolito directed her kindergarten chorus of more than 125 children in a production of The Three Piggy Opera at the Oak Street School, Lakewood. All seven of the school’s kindergarten classes combined in this retelling of the fairy tale, set to music. Upon receiving a grant from the state in the area of puppetry, the teacher used the skills of Jane Vaccaro and Laura Petrovich, two teachers of visual arts, to create large stick puppets designed to complement the action of the story. More than 30 children held large cutouts of animals, signs and buildings, and the other young singers told the story through song.

Poets’ work expected

to be published in 2003
