Corps plans big event

The Phoenix Drum & Bugle Corps and the Phoenix Kidets will hold the third annual Phoenix Night on June 15 at the Drum Point Road Sports Complex in Brick at 7 p.m. The entire community, as well as parents and friends, is invited to attend this special performance as a thank you for the support given to the Phoenix programs.

"This will be our inaugural performance of our 2002 shows," said Director Roger Esposito, "and an opportunity to perform for family and friends before entering the competitive circuit."

The youths who participate in the Phoenix programs come from Ocean, Monmouth and Burlington counties.

The Phoenix Kidets is entering its fourth season. Formed in 1999, the Kidets introduces the fundamentals of the drum corps activity to children 9-13 years old in a fun environment. The Kidets are the current Garden State Circuit Division IV champions. They will be performing a program of Spanish music.

Phoenix Drum & Bugle Corps, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary season this year, is the current Garden State Circuit Division III champions. The corps will be performing a program of songs made popular by Bette Midler and will compete in several shows sanctioned by the Garden State Circuit. The season will end with a two-week tour that will take them to Madison, Wisc., for Drums Corps Interna-tional Championships.

In addition to the summer drum corps programs, Phoenix sponsors Complexity Winter Guard and Firestorm Indoor Percussion units during the winter season.

On July 13, Phoenix will host the Horns for Hunger Drum Corps Competition. In lieu of admission fees, Phoenix will be collecting donations for the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

Phoenix sponsors include the Brick Township Recreation Department and the Jersey Shore Council of Boy Scouts. The Brick Township Board of Education provides rehearsal space.
