Police chief retires

WEST LONG BRANCH — Chief Thomas P. Zambrano has announced his retirement from the Monmouth University Police Department after serving the university for 22 years.

He is being replaced temporarily by Deputy Chief Ken Walker while a search is conducted for a permanent replacement, according to university spokesman Frank Di Rocco Jr.

The Police Department falls under the purview of Patti Swannack, the university’s vice president for administrative services.

Since Zambrano began as a patrolman in 1980, the Police Department has more than doubled in size to 20 officers today, including the chief. Although the enrollment at the school has increased over those years to approximately 5,700 today, crime has continued to drop on campus, the university said.

Zambrano has been actively involved in many professional organizations, including the Monmouth County Police Chiefs Association, the New Jersey CUPSA (College and University Public Safety Association) and PBA Local 141.

He served on the executive board of the Police Chiefs Association, holding the position of second vice president; on the executive board of N.J. CUPSA, where he was past president, and as a trustee of PBA Local 141.

Zambrano was honored by the N.J. CUPSA June 5, when he was presented with the organization’s first Life Achievement Award.
