4-H livestock show held at Horse Park of N.J.

More than 100 4-H and FFA members from throughout the state exhibited their animals at the first livestock show held recently at the Horse Park of New Jersey, Upper Freehold.

The show offered a new opportunity for FFA and 4-H members to compete, while the event also celebrated the 100th anniversary of 4-H youth clubs.

Bob Simpkins of Yardville, a longtime 4-H participant, welcomed the participants and told the 4-H members that he still lives by the 4-H motto, "To make the best better." He followed his remarks with the singing of the national anthem.

The Monmouth County 4-H Invitational Show offered friendly competition among members exhibiting their poultry, beef, sheep, goats, rabbits and small animals.

Entertainment was provided by a mounted drill team competition among three horse clubs from Atlantic, Ocean and Monmouth counties, followed by a "Horseless Horse Show" in which the livestock watched their owners do the "hoofing" around barrels, pole bending, and other relays.

Ribbons, medals, banners and trophies were awarded.

Other entertainment was provided by the Long Ear Acres looking zoo, a pigeon release, and an animal costume class. An ice cream social closed the day’s events.

The show was sponsored by community businesses and was produced by the teamwork of county youth leaders.

Many 4-H members will also participate in the Monmouth County Fair, which will celebrate 100 years of "The Power of Youth in 4-H."

The fair will be held at the East Freehold Park Showgrounds, Kozloski Road, Freehold Township, July 24-28.
