Mercer County man killed in crash

UPPER FREEHOLD — A 77-year-old Mercer County man was killed last week as a result of a traffic accident at the intersection of Route 524 and Sharon Station Road.

Arthur E. Avery, Robbinsville, was pronounced dead at 4:15 p.m. July 11 after being flown to the Capital Health Systems, Trenton, by a state police helicopter.

According to state police spokesman Sgt. Al Della Fave, Avery was headed south on Sharon Station Road in a silver Buick.

He stopped at the stop sign located at the intersection of that road and Route 524.

At approximately 2:44 p.m., a blue GMC van driven by Tibor Szabo, 35, Matawan, was proceeding east on Route 524.

Della Fave said that Avery’s Buick pulled out directly into the path of the van and was struck on the passenger side.

"Apparently the van could not stop and broadsided the car," he said.

Szabo was not injured in the crash.

Della Fave said that there are no plans to file charges in the case since Szabo was not at fault.
