Service, picnic set at Old Yellow Meeting House

The Friends of the Old Yellow Meeting House, in conjunction with the Upper Freehold Baptist Church, will hold the 87th Annual Reunion Service July 28 at the historic Old Yellow Meeting House, 72 Yellow Meeting House Road, off Route 526.

The worship service will begin at 11 a.m. and will be led by the Rev. F. Staton Bentley Jr., pastor of Upper Freehold Baptist Church. Also participating in this year’s service will be the Rev. George Simmons, pastor of the Hornerstown Baptist Church, who will deliver the sermon; and the Rev. William E.F. Wentzien. Bonnie and Gordon Gunzelman will direct the choir and play the organ.

An picnic luncheon featuring fried chicken will be held under a tent on the Meeting House lawn after the service. The funds raised by luncheon ticket sales will go toward the preservation and maintenance of the restored Old Yellow Meeting House and Parsonage. General admission is $10, the price for children ages 6-12 is $4, and children age 5 and younger get in free.

Featured at this year’s reunion will be "Cemetery Walks" conducted by Liz Dey and John Fabiano at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. These walks will focus on interesting facts about individuals buried in this historic cemetery and their impact on local history.

Another event at this year’s reunion will be the unveiling of three wayside signs. The signs, which are commonly found at national and state parks, provide visitors with a self-guided tour. Local artist Alice Ely Wikoff donated her work for this project. The three sign subjects are the parsonage and Baptist ministry, the cemetery and grounds, and the meeting house.

The reunion will conclude with the 27th annual business meeting of the Friends of the Old Yellow Meeting House at 2 p.m.
