Film festival to begin Aug. 21 in Red Bank

The Freedom Film Society will present five days and nights of cutting-edge independent film, video and digital video arts during its Second Annual Red Bank International Film Festival scheduled for Aug. 21-25 at the Clearview Cinema.

A sellout in its inaugural season last summer, the festival will feature a full program of short- to feature-length films in narrative, experimental, animation and documentary genres, including the work of local filmmakers.

Tickets for the festival go on sale Aug. 1 at the Clearview Cinema box office on White Street.

Special events will include guest speakers, question-and-answer sessions with filmmakers, live music, receptions, and the second annual awards presentation.

Special programs will highlight Mexican cinema, as well as films by women and local filmmakers.

The International Film Festival will begin Aug. 21 at 6 p.m. with a Count Basie Birthday Bash at the Count Basie Theatre on Monmouth Street. The celebration will end with a parade through Red Bank led by the Sun Ra Arkestra. Screenings will begin at 9 p.m.

Screenings Aug. 22 and 23 will run from 3-10 p.m., Aug. 24, from noon-10 p.m. and Aug. 25, noon-8 p.m. FFS sponsors Funk & Standard Variety Store, Afridesia and Downtown will host nightly parties, and an awards ceremony will be held at Nové on the festival’s final night.

Volunteers sought for various opportunities

The Volunteer Center of Monmouth County needs volunteers for a family carnival to be held by a Red Bank day care center Aug. 9 from 4:15-6 p.m. Volunteers will set up and run simple carnival games. The minimum age for volunteers is 14.

An Eatontown housing program for homeless mothers and children needs individuals to supervise residents and handle some documentation during shifts. Days are Monday-Thursday from 3-8 p.m., Friday from 3-midnight, and various weekend shifts. Training is provided.

A Fair Haven faith-based ministry seeks volunteers for general clerical help. Minimum volunteering age is 18.

An organization serving the physically handicapped of Monmouth and Ocean counties seeks volunteers for its shopping day Oct. 15 at an Eatontown department store. The Volunteer Center is located at 191 Bath Ave., Long Branch. For more information, please call the center at (732) 728-1927.

Center to offer programs at SCAN during August

Monmouth Medical Center will offer several free programs at the SCAN Learning Center, Monmouth Mall, Eatontown, beginning with a Parkinson’s disease support group meeting Aug. 1 from 10 a.m.-noon.

Carol Palmer will discuss "Mood Eating" Aug. 5 from 10 a.m.-noon. "Coping for Caregivers" will be presented by Ruth Keilen Aug. 7 from 1-3 p.m.

"Challenging Irrational Thoughts and Beliefs" will be presented by Palmer Aug. 12 from 1-3 p.m. A blood pressure screening will be given Aug. 14 from 12:30-2:30 p.m. "Positive Self-Talk" will be presented by Palmer Aug. 15 from 1-3 p.m.

Bus trip to Mets

vs. Dodgers Aug. 18

The 49’ers Circle at St. Luke’s Church, 535 Broadway, Long Branch, will sponsor a bus trip to see the Mets vs. Dodgers baseball game Aug. 18 at 10:30 a.m. Aug.18 is also the Mets Hall of Fame induction day. Cost is $39.

Christian Women’s

conference Aug. 24

Garlands of Grace, Lincroft section of Middletown, will hold the N.J. Christian Women’s Conference Aug. 24 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Sheraton-Eatontown Hotel, Route 35. Tickets are $35 which includes a box lunch.

Guest speaker will be Elizabeth George, author of A Woman After God’s Own Heart.
