Navesink Garden Club named club of year

The Navesink Garden Club, Red Bank, was recently honored at the annual meeting of the Garden Club of New Jersey, and received the Katherine Cutler Award for best junior garden club of the year in New Jersey.

The award is for the winner of the highest evaluation for accomplishments of all junior gardener objectives and a unique program with youth. The club is celebrating its 55th year in 2002.

Club member Betty Scharmann received the Garden Club of Westfield trophy for junior chairwoman of the year, and for directing and achieving commendable results. Scharmann is in her third year as youth chairwoman.

The club was awarded a total of six silver trophies and 11 certificates for its programs, such as garden therapy and civic endeavors. It also received the Certificate of Merit with Gold Seal for continued excellence in all fields of junior gardening and its Beatrix Potter holiday exhibit at Monmouth Museum.
