Allentown to host ‘God Bless America’ event

The Allentown Business Community Association is sponsoring a community event, "God Bless America," Sept. 8.

The daytime portion of the activities will begin at Heritage Park, Allentown, with a Founders Day Picnic from noon to 5 p.m. The activities will include a softball game featuring Civil War "soldiers" vs. the townspeople, horseshoe tossing contests, games and storytelling.

Local firemen, police, and search and rescue dogs and owners, some of whom were at the World Trade Center site in the days following Sept. 11, will also be on hand. Admission is free, and picnickers should bring blankets or chairs, and may bring their own picnics or purchase food from participating service organizations.

The evening’s festivities will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Allentown High School with a memorial tribute to the victims of Sept. 11. There will be a performance by the Eastern Wind Symphony of The College of New Jersey, along with special guest speakers, and vocalists Lou Watson and Amber Lohme.

Admission is free; free-will donations will be accepted. A portion of all proceeds will benefit the Salvation Army in Trenton and the local Good Neighbor Fund.

Organizers are still seeking local sponsors for the events.

The performance at the high school will be held rain or shine, but the picnic portion of the day will be subject to the weather.
