NORTH BRUNSWICK — The township’s Make-A-Difference Day Committee is looking for volunteers for the annual event.

"The committee will meet on Sept. 17 to discuss this year’s activities," said committee member Pete Clark, who is the assistant principal of North Brunswick Township High School. "New volunteers are needed and welcome."

Make-A-Difference Day is an annual event that takes place the fourth Saturday of every October, according to Clark. The North Brunswick Make-A-Difference Day Committee is comprised of Clark, Marianne Mazer, Leslie MacNeill and Donna Como.

Clark also said that millions have participated. It was estimated that 2.2 million people gave time to their communities to volunteer on that day in 2002, accomplishing thousands of projects in hundreds of towns and helping an estimated 25 million people.

There is a variety of activities involved with Make-A-Difference Day related to helping the community, according to Clark.

"Some of the activities include the Municipal Alliance, cleaning up and painting Hermann Park, the Meals-on-Wheels program at the senior center, housework for senior citizens, and a variety of assisting activities in the township," Clark said.

The Make-A-Difference Day Committee wants to show the public that helping others is very important, according to Clark.

"Helping everyone is important," Clark said. "We want to try to get some of the businesses involved to help get employees to do a cleanup. We are looking to give all of the donations we receive to the Twin Towers Fund."

Each year in April, hundreds of good deeds done on Make-A-Difference Day are selected for honors, headlines and charitable donations, according to Clark.

He said that the committee would like to see any and all groups become involved.

"The committee is reaching out to all community groups, businesses, families, schools and others to participate in this event by "making a difference in North Brunswick," Clark said. "Two years ago, over 30 civic groups and businesses in North Brunswick participated in this event. Local volunteers will be eligible for part of $2.6 million available to Make-A- Difference Day charities."

The North Brunswick Township Make-A-Difference Day Committee will meet Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in the North Brunswick Township High School faculty dining room to discuss this year’s activities. Clark said that new volunteers are welcome to attend.
