Bids sought for Cedar

Bridge Avenue project

Ocean County officials are seeking bids for the reconstruction of a mile of Cedar Bridge Avenue (Route 528) in Lakewood. The Board of Freeholders authorized Ocean County Engineer Ronald A. Lotrec-chio to advertise for bids.

"We have all our permits in place for this job," said Lotrecchio. "Work will begin this fall."

The project will include widening Cedar Bridge Avenue from Clover Street to Route 88 from two lanes to four lanes. In addition, a portion of Hurley Road from Cedar Bridge Avenue to Route 9 will be reconstructed.

The bridge, on Meadow Avenue, will be replaced as part of the project.

Lotrecchio noted the bridge is structurally deficient and the county has already received the necessary permits including a Coastal Area Facilities Review Act permit to replace the span.

"It’s important to get this work under way," said Freeholder Director Joseph H. Vicari. "This artery services many drivers in some of the largest communities including Lakewood and Brick Township."

Lotrecchio said bids will be received in about six weeks. The project will take about 16 months to complete.

The cost of the project, about $3,750,000, will be covered with $1.2 million from state aid, about $1.5 million from the bridge bond act, and the balance will be paid by the county.

The county also will spend about $300,000 to have the railroad crossing in the area of the work upgraded.
