Local singer at Red Bank cafe Dec. 13, 28

The Internet Café, 1 W. Front St., Red Bank, will welcome singer Clay Mitchell Dec. 13 and 28 from 8:30-10:30 p.m. Admission is $5. Oklahoma native Mitchell combines blues and rock in his music.

A resident of Shrewsbury, Mitchell is also a guitarist and served as a musical consultant on the movie The Color Purple. His latest CD is Open Cage.

Southside Johnny and Jukes concert Dec. 31

Ocean Place Resort and Spa, Ocean Avenue, Long Branch, will welcome Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes Dec. 31 at 9:30 p.m.

The concert is the highlight of four New Year’s Eve packages offered by the resort (each named for a Jukes song), ranging in price from $69-$324 per person. Attendees of "Havin’ a Party" will enjoy brunch with the band New Year’s Day.

The Jukes were founded in 1974 by "Southside" Johnny Lyon and Steve Van Zandt, who now stars on the Sopranos. The band mixes classic rock, blues and soul.

Rape care advocates sought for Hazlet center

180, Turning Lives Around, Hazlet, is accepting applications until Dec. 31 for individuals interested in serving as rape care advocates for the center. The 60-hour training will be Monday evenings and Saturdays Jan. 18-March 8 (except Jan. 20 and Feb. 17).

The center is in particular need of bilingual and multilingual individuals. Training includes crisis intervention, hotline counseling, and other topics. An orientation and information session will be Jan. 13 at 7 p.m.

Books on cassette tape, large print available

The New Jersey Library for The Blind and Handicapped suggests a book for holiday giving, and has books on cassette tape and in large print for individuals who are blind or handicapped. The free books are the same found in public libraries, and are free.
