FRIEDA ASH, 109, formerly of East Brunswick, Highland Park and New York City, died Dec. 10 in Central Jersey Jewish Home for the Aged, Somerset section of Franklin. Her husband, Benjamin Ash, died in 1964. Surviving are a daughter, Rita Rummel; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Arrangements were under the direction of Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Manalapan.

FRANK BELLES, 82, of Spotswood died Dec. 11 at his son’s home in Spotswood. His wife, Matilda Ridilla Belles, died in 1982. Surviving are a son, Frank J. Belles of Spotswood; a daughter, Carol Presnal of South River; two sisters, Pauline Swithers of Edwardsville, Pa., and Mabel Belles of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson. A Mass was offered at Sacred Heart Slovak Church, Wilkes-Barre. Interment was in Sacred Heart Slovak Cemetery, Dallas, Pa.

ANGELA BRUNO, 92, of North Brunswick died Dec. 12 at home. Her husband, Anthony Bruno, died in 1978, and a son, Anthony J. Bruno Jr., died this year. Surviving are two sons, Carmen J. Bruno of North Brunswick and Peter J. Bruno of Bridgewater; three daughters, Mary Lombardo, Martha Cresti and Carol Ann Lombardo, all of North Brunswick; a daughter-in-law, Marie Bruno of Milltown; 21 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. A Mass was offered at Saint Mary of Mount Virgin Church, New Brunswick. Entombment was in Franklin Memorial Park Mausoleum, North Brunswick. DOROTHY PEARCE FREIWALD, 76, of East Brunswick, formerly of Old Bridge, died Dec. 12 at home. Prior to her retirement, she was a history teacher at South River Junior High School. A reporter for the Home News, she also worked at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. Her husband, William P. Freiwald, died in 1996. Surviving are two sisters, Ada Lie and Mary Ford, both of South Amboy. Services were held at Christ Church, South Amboy. Interment was in the church cemetery.

WILLIAM CHARLES HARTMAN, 88, of South River died Dec. 11 in Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge division. Prior to his retirement in 1977, he was employed for 40 years as an electrical maintenance man with Peter J. Switzer, Spotswood. He was a member of South River Fire Dept. Engine Company No. 1 for 70 years, serving as assistant chief in 1952. His wife, Valeria Zahorsky Hartman, died in May. Surviving are a daughter, LaVerne Smith of South River; a sister, Dorothy Hartman, also of South River; and a grandson, William J. Smith. A Mass was offered at St. Mary’s Church, South River. Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, East Brunswick.

WALTER PLISH of South River died Dec. 10 at home. His first wife, Vera Kurilchick Plish, died in 1981. Surviving are his wife, Helen Novack Plish; a son, Paul Plish of Florida; a daughter, Lydia Ashman of Arizona; a sister, Ann Maslonka of Barnegat; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Services were held at the First Russian Baptist Church, South River. Interment was in Washington Monumental Cemetery, South River.

THOMAS N. HERRING of Milltown, formerly of East Brunswick, died Dec. 10 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. Surviving are his wife, Anne Losada Herring; two sons, Grant of Monroe and Peter of Milltown; two daughters, Carolyn Sowell of Milltown and Rebecca Lucas of Monroe; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. J. HERBERT HODAPP, 68, of East Brunswick died Dec. 13 at home. Surviving are his wife, Peggy Pancza Hodapp; a son, Kevin Hodapp of Howell; a brother, Elbert W. Hodapp Jr. of East Brunswick; and a granddaughter. A Mass was offered at St. the Apostle Church, Old Bridge. HELEN DUMBRESKI MALKIEWICZ, 91, of Old Bridge died Dec. 10 in St. Peter’s University Hospital, New Brunswick. Her husband, Joseph S. Malkiewicz, died in 1998. Surviving are four daughters, Dorothy VanArsdale of East Stroudsburg, Pa., Irene Geipel of Old Bridge, Eleanor Lanzaro of the Morganville section of Marlboro and Jean Krolik of Orange, Calif.; two sons, Donald Malkiewicz of Little Egg Harbor and Joseph Malkiewicz of Clearwater, Fla.; 20 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. A Mass was offered at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Old Bridge. Interment was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Parlin section of Sayreville. PHYLLIS MALLER, 74, of Monroe died Dec. 4 in The Medical Center at Princeton. A daughter, Joanne Freundlich, died in 1995. Surviving are her husband, Nathaniel Maller; a son, Lawrence D. Rand of New York City; a daughter, Jeanne Rand Naglak of West Windsor; two brothers, Milton Garrett of Connecticut and Bernard Gorowitz of Clifton Park, N.Y.; and four grandchildren. Services were held at Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold. Interment was in Workmen’s Circle Cemetery, Freehold. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.

FRED G. PIERSON, 62, of Spotswood died Dec. 10 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. Surviving are a stepsister, Gladys Massanet, and a niece, Rachel Massanet, both of Old Bridge. Services were held at Brunswick Memorial Home, East Brunswick. Interment was in Brig. Gen. William C. LOUISE GIURANO RUMPF, 79, of the Parlin section of Sayreville died Dec. 10 in St. Peter’s University Hospital, New Brunswick. Her husband, Robert, died in 1987. Surviving are three daughters, Michele Kilian of East Brunswick, Marlena Wornowicz of Old Bridge and Claudia Kellert of Brick; a brother, Joseph Giurano of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and two grandchildren. A Mass was offered at St. Ambrose Church, Old Bridge. Entombment was in St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia section of Woodbridge. LAWRENCE SOBOLEWSKI, 88, died Dec. 10 in Summerhill Nursing Home, Old Bridge. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen Kwasnik Sobolewski. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Anne and Ronald Strach of East Brunswick, and two grandchildren, Amy and Adam. Graveside services were held at St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, N.Y.

BEATRICE KOSA ZUKOFSKI, 68, of South River died Dec. 10 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital New Brunswick. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by System Office Products, South River. Her husband, Jacob Zukofski, died in 1969. Surviving are a friend and companion, Louis Molnar; a son, Thomas Zukofski of Freehold; two daughters, Cathy Tamke of Lakewood and Bonnie Delaney of Point Pleasant, a brother, Kenneth Kosa of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of East Brunswick; three sisters Katherine Borowinski of South River, Brenda Weber of Jupiter, Fla., and Sherry Sudder of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; and seven grandchildren. Services were held at Rezem Funeral Home, East Brunswick. Interment was in Washington Monumental Cemetery, South River.
