Pedestrian killed crossing

Old Bridge Turnpike Tues.

EAST BRUNSWICK — A 78-year-old township woman was killed Tuesday when she and her husband were struck by a car while they attempted to cross Old Bridge Turnpike, police said.

Hazel Kelmer was crossing the road near Flagler Street with her husband, Charles, also 78, at about 5:25 p.m., when the pair was struck in the southbound lane by a car being driven south on Old Bridge Turnpike by Harriet Krupa, also 78, according to a police report.

Hazel Kelmer suffered fatal injuries, and her husband injured his lower right leg.

Police said Krupa’s car did not stop after the accident, and East Brunswick police officers later located her at her township home. She reportedly told police that she was unaware she struck anyone while driving, and no charges had been filed against her at press time yesterday.

Police said there is a working street lamp in the area where the accident took place. The speed limit posted in that section of Old Bridge Turnpike is 35 mph. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, but said yesterday it did not appear that Krupa was speeding.

"At this time, (officers with the traffic division) do not feel that excessive speed was a factor," East Brunswick police Lt. Geraldine Garrett said yesterday.

The Kelmers, of nearby Helena Street, are believed to have been walking to a restaurant in the vicinity at the time of the accident, police said.
