The Rutgers University women’s track team competed in the Princeton Invitational on Dec. 7. Sayreville’s Claire Inskeep finished first in the 20-pound weight competition with a throw of 15.99 meters.

In the mile run, Monroe’s Jamie Kerstetter took third with a time of 5:22.30.

Marc Magliaro scored a game-high 15 points to lead Monroe U12 boys travel basketball team to a 35-34 victory over Colts Neck. Joe Costa added nine points and two clutch free throws along with five rebounds. Vincent Mahmoud hit the game-winning free throw with four seconds to seal the victory. Vincent finished with five points and nine rebounds. Ryan Clark chipped in with five points and two rebounds, and Kevin Synarski and Ryan Walp also played well in the victory. The team is now 6-1 and next takes on Holmdel Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Monroe Rec Center.

Milltown Little League will hold its baseball registration Jan. 14 and 16 from 6-8 p.m. at the senior citizens center on Violet Terrace. All youngsters ages 5-16 are eligible. Forms will be handed out in school, and are available at borough hall and the public library. If unable to attend, mail to the address on the form. After trailing 10-2 in the first quarter, the Monroe U10 travel basketball team came back against Oceanport and won the game 29-28. Kevin Conklin led the team on both sides of the ball to inspire the rally. Tim Brix, Travis Duffner and Conklin led the scoring, while Mike Mahmoud and Zack Batchelor played excellent defense. J.D. Dougherty, Brian Dooley, Steven Poupos and Kyle Waldron also played well in the win.

Final registration for the 2003 Monroe Township Baseball Association season will be held on Jan. 4 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Monroe Township Community Center. There will be no late charge for this registration date. For registrations made after this date, the late charge ($25) will be enforced. The late registration fee is $100 for the first player, $90 per sibling, after Jan. 4. Players who register after the drafts are held will not be eligible to pitch during the season. Monroe’s Sarah Soden, a senior at St. John Vianney High School, Holmdel, has signed her National Letter of Intent to play lacrosse at Rutgers University. A midfielder, Soden has been a varsity lacrosse player for St. John Vianney since her freshman season. She helped lead SJV to the division championship in 2000 and 2001 and was the team’s leading scorer in 2002. Soden was also a standout on the soccer team for SJV, earning all-division status in 2001 after leading the Shore Conference in assists. During her time there, SJV’s soccer team won the Parochial A state championship (2000) and Shore Conference championship (2000), and was a finalist in both tournaments in 2001. She played one season with the Metro Lacrosse club team, and was selected to the L3 All-Star Team in 2002 while playing for her current club, Tri-State Lacrosse.

Rutgers women’s lacrosse head coach Laura Brand is extremely excited to have Soden aboard.

"Sarah is a wonderful addition to the program," she said. "We expect her to make a truly significant impact. Her stick skills and speed are outstanding and she is always willing to take the next step. She has excelled in multiple sports and we know her versatility will assists us in our program goals."

Rutgers returns 19 letter-winners and 10 starters from the 2002 team that finished 7-9 overall and 2-4 in the Big East. The 2003 Scarlet Knights will open the season on March 1 at Virginia Tech at 2 p.m. RU and first-year head coach Laura Brand will make their season debut at home on March 11 when they host Delaware.

The Black Magic, a central New Jersey based girls’ fastpitch team is looking for a pitcher and position player to complete its 14U roster for the 2003 season. The Black Magic (formerly the Jersey Nightmare) is a fourth-year program looking for experienced, dedicated players.
