Rape care advocates sought for Hazlet center

180, Turning Lives Around, Hazlet, is accepting applications until Dec. 31 for individuals interested in serving as rape care advocates for the center. The 60-hour training will be Monday evenings and Saturdays Jan. 18-March 8 (except Jan. 20 and Feb. 17).

The center is in particular need of bilingual and multilingual individuals. Training includes crisis intervention, hotline counseling, and other topics. An orientation and information session will be Jan. 13 at 7 p.m.

RSVP seeks volunteers for exercise, reading

The Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Monmouth County, Oakhurst section of Ocean Township, is seeking volunteers for its osteoporosis exercise programs held in Long Branch.

Training will be provided to individuals that will train small classes on balance and strength.

Positions are also now being offered to qualified adults to read to first-graders once a week at various local public schools.

No teaching experience is required, and training will be offered.

Artists sought for ‘Brass Ring’ sculpture program

The Asbury Park Consortium has announced it is accepting design proposals from New Jersey artists interested in designing a carousel horse as part of the consortium’s "Reaching for the Brass Ring" program. Area businesses are sponsoring the creation of life-size carousel horses to be displayed at indoor and outdoor locations throughout Asbury Park beginning next spring. Selected proposals will be presented to sponsors as artistic options, and artists will be presented with a $1,000 honorarium if a sponsor selects their design. Six Flags launches ‘Search for Heroes’

Six Flags Great Adventure has launched a "Search for Heroes" essay contest to shine a light on the people who have dramatically impacted the lives of those around them.

People of all ages are invited to submit a 500-word essay about their personal hero.

One grand-prize winner will be selected by a celebrity panel of judges from the 10 finalists.

Fifteen honorable mention prizes will be awarded.

The top 25 winners will be invited to ride the new Superman-Ultimate Flight flying roller coaster on its inaugural run in the spring of 2003.

"We’re looking for everyday people doing extraordinary things," said Mick Foley, a two-time best-selling author, former World Wrestling Entertainment superstar and a member of the "Search for Heroes" judging panel.

"This contest is a tribute to great men, women and children whose work often goes unrecognized."

Foley will be joined by philanthropist and NFL Super Bowl XXV Most Valuable Player Otis "O.J." Anderson, actress and philanthropist Holly Robinson Peete, award-winning vocal group LMNT, NBA All-Star nominee and member of the Minnesota Timberwolves Wally Azczerbiak, WB-11 New York morning news features reporter Larry Hoff, and Philadelphia’s KYW TV-3 news anchor Pat Ciarrocchi.

The grand-prize winner will receive a family four-pack of Six Flags season passes and a weekend getaway for four to New York City or Washington, D.C.

The top nine finalists will each receive a Six Flags season pass.

Fifteen honorable mention winners will receive a family four-pack of one-day admission tickets to Six Flags Great Adventure and Wild Safari.

All contest entries must be typed in English and be no longer than 500 words.

Entries must include the writer’s name, age, address, phone number and e-mail address, if available.
