MARLBORO — The township has received a Community Development Block Grant of $47,989 that will be used to pay for renovations required under the Amer-icans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

According to information provided by the town, the grant will be coupled with $9,891 from the year 2000 Capital Program for the ADA renovations.

The project will be completed by Joseph Hamilton Construction Inc., of North Arlington, which submitted the lowest qualified bid. The firm’s bid was $57,880.

The project will be managed by the township’s Division of Public Works. According to Superintendent of Public Works Bob DiMarco, the renovations will consist of the installation of automatic door openers at the senior center, the municipal complex and the Marlboro Recreation Community Center.

"When these improvements are completed, these areas will be in accordance with ADA requirements," DiMarco said.

These particular accessibility renovations are part of a larger effort by the town to meet federal ADA requirements in all aspects, DiMarco said, adding that over the summer renovations were completed in the police station lobby to meet ADA requirements.

"As part of our road program, another project that we’re working on has to do with renovating the parking lots to provide van accessibility," DiMarco said. "We’re also working on creating depressed sidewalks at intersections to create accessibility ramps."

Although the contract was awarded to Joseph Hamilton Construction, a bid was also received from Automated Entrance Systems, of Wall Township, in the amount of $52,950. According to a memo from DiMarco to Business Administrator Chris Marion, Automated Entrance Systems did not submit the required Consent of Surety Certificate with its bid and should be disqualified.

The memo from DiMarco said Joseph Hamilton Construction submitted all of the necessary documents and references were checked and found to be satisfactory. Therefore, he recommended the contract be awarded to that firm for $57,880.

The Township Council awarded the contract at its Dec. 12 meeting.

The ADA renovations to the senior center, municipal complex and recreation center are expected to take 60 days to complete and should begin shortly, DiMarco said.
