LAKEWOOD — A pedestrian was killed in a traffic accident that occurred on the evening of Jan. 19, according to Capt. Robert Lawson, a spokesman for the Lakewood Police Department.

The accident took place at about 8:25 p.m. on 14th Street, about 1,300 feet west of Arboretum Parkway.

According to preliminary information provided by Lawson, Ezriel Munk, 38, of Lakewood, was traveling westbound on 14th Street in his 1988 Toyota Camry when he struck and killed Israel Frid, 58, of Brooklyn, N.Y., who was walking across 14th Street in a southerly direction at the time of the accident.

"The victim was transported to Kimball Medical Center by the Hatzolah First Aid Squad," said Lawson. "He was pronounced dead at 9:15 p.m. by the attending physician in the emergency room."

Lawson said Frid, who was carrying an Israeli passport, was dressed in black when he was struck.

"The driver said he never saw the victim," the captain said, "but there was a full moon that night."

Munk was taken to the Medical Center of Ocean County, Brick, after the accident for a blood test. Lawson said there was no suspicion by police that he was driving while intoxicated, but Munk consented to the test after being asked to take it by police. The results of the test have not yet been made public.

Patrolmen Larry Patterson and Ray Przewoznik, who responded to the accident, are continuing their investigation into it. The Traffic and Safety Division of the Lakewood Police Department is also investigating.

Lawson said the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and its Fatal Accident Support Team, as well as the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department and its Criminal Investigation Unit are assisting Patterson and Przewoznik in their investigation.
