Colin Horsch hit on six three-point baskets en route to 19 points to lead the Monroe U13 travel basketball team to a 72-45 victory over Edison. Mark Gulick and James Pellino also had strong games with Mark scoring 15 and James adding 12 points. Joe Costa added seven points with three assists while Mike Buffolino had six points. Vinnie Small hit for five points while Kevin Synarski, Justin Dinsmore and Vincent Mahmoud combined for eight points and five steals. The team is now 3-2 and next takes on Milltown on Jan. 31.

The Middlesex County Department of Parks and Recreation will conduct the annual Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders Basketball Tournament starting March 10. This year’s tournament will be held at the Middlesex County Vocational School, 21 Sutton Lane, Piscataway, and will consist of four divisions: Youth Division #1 (12U); Youth Division #2 (13-14); Youth Division #3 (15-17); and Adult Men Division (18 and over). Both boys and girls are welcome to participate. The entrance fee for all divisions is $50 per team. This is a single-elimination tournament. Application/roster forms are available by calling Chuck Roberts at (732) 745-4222 between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Division entries will be limited, on a first-come-first-served basis. Deadline for application is Feb. 21. Rosters and birth certificates must be carried by each coach for verification before the first game and for subsequent games if required.

The National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association has named East Brunswick girls’ soccer coach Lou Kosa as its recipient of the NISOCA Coach Merit Award for his contribution to the interscholastic game exemplifying the highest standards of coaching ethics.

The Monroe U12 boys’ travel basketball team had a great weekend behind the outstanding play of Joe Costa and Mike Buffolino as it defeated Matawan 61-49. Joe had 15 points and eight rebounds, and Mike added 18 points and 12 rebounds. Vincent Mahmoud and Ryan Clark also had strong games with 11 points between them. Marc Magliaro, Kevin Synarski, Andrew Philbert, Justin Dinsmore, Ryan Walp and Justin Mitchell combined for 17 points for the win. On Sunday it was once again Mike Buffolino leading the way scoring 15 points and adding 11 rebounds. Mahmoud and Costa also played strong games with Mahmoud scoring 13 and Costa adding nine points, and the two grabbing 16 rebounds between them in the 44-32 win over Middletown. Kevin Synarski, Justin Mitchell, and Andrew Philbert combined for seven points for Monroe, who is now 10-1.

The Monroe Township Roller Hockey League is now holding registration for its spring season. The league is for Monroe Township residents only. The league is for boys and girls ages 6-16 as of April 1. Registration fee is $35, $5 for an additional child. The work bond fee is $25.
