Handmade blankets needed for AHS project

Allentown High School students Margaret Ryan, Chris Schulze, David Nicholson and Jonathan Steuber have established the Quilter’s Barn, Allentown, as a blanket drop-off site for Project Linus NJ Inc. The students became involved with Project Linus as a community service project for the National Honor Society.

Project Linus is a nonprofit organization that distributes handmade blankets to children who have been diagnosed with serious illness or trauma. The organization collects blankets from its drop-off sites and distributes them internationally.

The students have assembled kits that contain all the fabric needed to create a quilt for the nonprofit organization. The kits can be picked up at the Quilter’s Barn, 34 S. Main St., and then returned when the quilts are completed. Anyone who wishes to donate the time and effort to make a quilt can also participate without the aid of the pre-assembled kit, but certain stipulations are required for the quilt: the quilt must be handmade (knitted, crocheted, quilted, hand- or machine-sewn), it must be between 12 by 12 inches and 40 by 60 inches in size, and it must be washable. Project Linus also welcomes donations other than quilts, such as fabric, yarn, sewing notions, stamps, printer paper and envelopes to support blanket drives.
