Fewer children than anticipated will move to a different school

As the parent of a child living in the so-called "sliver" section of Marlboro, I am deeply troubled by the inequality of the redistricting solution that will soon send her to Colts Neck.

It seems to me that (Super-intendent of Schools) Mr. (James) Wasser has failed to take into account the actual number of children that will be transferred from Marlboro to Colts Neck High School. He insists on using the projected number of students, which I am told is 122, while ignoring such factors as private and parochial school, learning centers and especially the minimum of 28 students that will fall under the sibling rule.

In truth, we are speaking of probably 50 kids, who live in various local developments, that will watch the Marlboro bus pass them by and pick up their friends, friends they have been together with for six or seven years, while they wait for the Colts Neck bus.

Although I understand how relieved the parents of those who still have a sibling in Marlboro’s school must be, is it fair to discriminate against those (children) whose siblings have already graduated and gone on to college or (are) only children?

Perhaps, had I been aware of this particular plan, I would have asked my oldest daughter, now a freshman at Cornell University, to delay her graduation for her sister’s sake. If the transfer of students must go forth, surely, we must find a more equitable way of doing it.
