Milltown resident runs into trouble in fight for left-turn signal

For more than a year I have been petitioning our Borough Council to add a left-turn arrow at the traffic signal on the corner of Ryders Lane and Washington Avenue. There are three left-turn arrows going into East Brunswick, but none coming into Milltown. It is an extremely busy intersection. Two women have been killed to date, and the potential exists for many more [accidents].

Traveling north on Ryders Lane and attempting a left turn into Milltown is like playing Russian roulette. Councilman Michael Skarzynski and Councilman Joseph Cruz had taken up my cause almost immediately. But like all things political, and since it is a county road, they are stopped in the mire of county red tape.

After several attempts to get the signal adjusted, Mr. Cruz informs me that the county will add the left-turn signal for a mere $100,000 or more. To add a simple left-turn signal? What justifies that amount?

How about this suggestion? Whose responsibility is it to adjust the timing at the signal? Can’t the timing be adjusted to allow a delayed green from the south(erly) direction? Or will that adjustment cost too much money as well? I guess we have to see if anyone else is hurt, or worse, to get any attention.

Where do I go from here?
