The Battle of Monmouth Strikers U14 boys’ soccer team fought a see-saw battle against a tough team from Middletown that ended in a 3-3 tie on May 4. Middletown scored first on a penalty kick, but the Strikers answered with a scrappy goal by Frank Carr, resulting from a long throw-in by Chris Faraone. Middletown went ahead when the Strikers’ defense failed to adequately clear the ball just before the end of the first half. The Strikers turned up the heat in the second half, and scored off a beautiful right-side corner by Zach Theinert, and headed in by Frank Carr into the upper-right corner. Middletown went ahead with a well-played goal, before the scoring was capped by the Strikers off another corner from Theinert, this time from the left side, and a spectacular diving header by Faraone. Michael Barszcz was solid at left fullback for the Strikers, as was Daniel Schwartz at right mid. Michael Rettberg secured the goal well, and Billy Phillips and Ivan Baretto dominated the midfield.
