Incumbents ready to make unchallenged run for council

WEST LONG BRANCH — Neither the Democratic nor Republican Party put up a second candidate for the two council seats at stake in the November election.

Councilman Joseph DeLisa, a Democrat, and Councilman Richard F. Cooper Jr., a Republican, are running for re-election to the Borough Council.

DeLisa, an official of the plumbers union, earned a place in his party’s column on the November ballot after garnering 16 write-in votes in the primaries.

Because of a weather-related snafu, DeLisa failed to file his petition by the deadline for the primary election.

Joseph Meehan, an attorney, received 13 write-in votes to be the other Democratic candidate but decided not to accept the nomination.

Art Cosentino and Frank Marchese received one write-in vote apiece in the Democratic Party’s primary, which is below the three-vote minimum necessary to receive nomination as a party’s candidate.

Meehan said he was too busy in his practice to serve on the council.

"I’m honored that they wrote me in," he said. "But I just don’t have the time."

The only candidate to file for election to the council in the Republican Party was Cooper, who received 73 votes in the primary. DeLisa received one write-in vote for council on the Republican side, and Steve Warren received one write-in vote as well.

Only 242 voters — 179 Republicans and 63 Democrats — went to the polls.
