SJV’s Reingle and
East Brunswick’s Staub
get All-State nods
With the spring baseball and softball seasons officially over, a healthy list of local players have been recognized for their excellence.
In softball, Tricia Reingle of St. John Vianney, Holmdel, was the top local performer this season, earning her a spot on the First Team All-State squad.
The sophomore pitcher went 22-3 with 322 strikeouts in 184 innings, while recording a 0.30 ERA and limiting opponents to a .091 batting average. At the plate, Reingle hit .423 with 24 RBIs to lead the team in both categories.
Her excellent performance this spring gives head coach Aado Kommendant plenty of reason to be optimistic about next year’s squad, when the Lancers will look to regain the spot atop the state’s rankings.
Along with her All-State nod, Reingle was also named to the All-Parochial, All-Shore, All-County and All-Division teams. She was joined on the latter three teams by teammates Lauren Taub and Jessica Vreeland. Taub batted .345 from the lead-off spot, with 35 hits and 94 at-bats to go along with 10 stolen bases, while Vreeland hit .366 with 16 RBIs.
SJV’s Tina Philburn earned a spot on the Third Team All-Parochial and Second Team All-Monmouth County squads, while teammates Lauren Incorvaia, Jenn Trace and Candice Ruffler were Third Team All-County picks.
East Brunswick’s Valerie Staub earned a spot on the Second Team All-State squad after enjoying a stellar senior season. The third baseman hit .390 in the lead-off spot, with a .444 on-base average. An outstanding all-around batter, Staub led the Bears with 25 runs scored and eight walks, while also hitting four home runs, two triples and two doubles.
She was also a good run-producer, knocking in 15 runs. Staub was also recognized as one of the best defensive third baseman in the state.
Along with her All-State nod, Staub was also named to the All-Group IV and All-Middlesex County teams, where she was joined by teammates Dara Gadziala and Jill Masterton.
Gadziala was Second Team All-Group IV after going 18-4 on the mound with 173 strikeouts and just 50 walks. Her 1.13 ERA can attest to her toughness, as can her six shutouts. At the plate, Gadziala hit .319 with a .449 slugging percentage and 18 RBIs.
Masterton was also named Second Team All-Group IV and First Team All-County after another solid season at shortstop. The talented senior hit .413 with 18 RBIs and eight extra-base hits, including one home run.
East Brunswick’s Beth Choma earned Second Team All-Middlesex County recognition, while Aimee Chroniewski was named to the Third Team.
Old Bridge’s Amanda Meatto was named to the Third Team All-State squad, while also earning spots on the First Team All-Group IV and All-Middlesex County teams.
Meatto was the heart and soul of the GMC-champion Knights this year, with a 19-6 record on the mound, and a stellar .99 ERA. She was at her best in the big spot this season, and struck out 99 batters while walking just nine.
Her teammate, Jamie Capra was named Third Team All-Middlesex County after batting .287 with 29 hits, including four doubles, a triple and two home runs, and 19 runs scored to go along with 10 RBIs.
Old Bridge’s Jackie Battaglino was named to the Third Team All-Middlesex County squad, as was Spotswood’s Jamie Kuhn and South River’s Jen Yong Yow. Yong Yow was also named to the Third Team All-Group I squad.
Old Bridge’s Gerard Haran was among the top local baseball players, earning a spot on the First Team All-Group IV squad. Haran, a senior catcher, hit .509 this season with 25 RBIs, seven doubles, a triple and two home runs.
But as impressive as his offensive numbers were, Haran was equally dominant behind the plate, where he backed up his reputation as one of the state’s top defensive catchers. Haran was also named to the First Team All-Middlesex County team, while teammates Dan Zeffiro and Tom Cifrodella were Second Team members.
Eat Brunswick’s Danny Lanzano was named to the Third Team All-Group IV and First Team All-Middlesex County squads after a stellar spring in which he was the area’s dominant pitcher. Lanzano finished with a 7-1 record and a 1.80 ERA and 84 strikeouts.
Lanzano’s teammate Chris Affinito was named to the Second Team All-County squad, as was Sayreville’s Jeff Toth. The Bombers’ James Corbett was a Third Team All-County selection.
Spotswood’s Greg Slavicek earned Second Team All-Group II honors, after enjoying a brilliant senior season. The center fielder/pitcher hit .500 with seven doubles, three triples, two home runs and 13 RBIs. On the mound, he was 4-0 with a 1.71 ERA, striking out an astonishing 73 batters in just 49 innings.
His teammate, Colin Feneis, earned a spot on the Third Team All-Group II squad after compiling an 8-2 mark on the mound this spring, with 41 strikeouts in 50 innings, and an ERA of .217. At the plate, he was just as impressive, batting .458 with seven doubles, a triple, five home runs and 30 RBIs.
Feneis is also credited with being perhaps the state’s best defensive shortstop. Both Feneis and Slavicek were also First Team All-County selections.
St. John Vianney’s Chris Soria also earned All-Group recognition, getting a spot on the Third Team All-Parochial squad.
