Victor A. Vientos, an Old Bridge resident and cross country and track star for St. John Vianney High School, Holmdel, has signed a letter of intent to run for Lehigh University, in Bethlehem, Pa. Victor started his running career at McDivitt Elementary School and later ran the mile for Carl Sandburg Middle School in Old Bridge. He went on to letter all four years for the Lancers at St. John Vianney. Victor plans to study mechanical engineering while at Lehigh and was recently selected to receive the Freehold Area Running Club Stuper Memorial Scholarship.

The Monroe 13/14 boys basketball team ended its spring season with a 14-8 record. The team played teams from all over Connecticut, Philadelphia, Long Island, Queens and teams from all parts of New Jersey. Mark Gulick, Joe Costa, Ryan Cushman, Kyle Horsch, and James Pellino were the starting five, with great help from Vincent Mahmoud and Kevin Synarski. Gulick, Costa and Cushman led the team in scoring while Horsch and Pellino did a good job on the boards. The boys will be playing in a National AAU tournament at Villanova (Pa.) University Aug. 8-10. Coach Costa said the boys really worked hard because "most of the games, we played with only six or seven guys, and the competition was very strong." The highlight of the season was a 53-36 win over a team from Connecticut.

Frog Hollow Swim Club will hold its annual 5-mile run through the streets of South Amboy and Sayreville on June 28 at 9 a.m. at the swim club. This year’s race is a benefit for the South Amboy First Aid squad. Frog Hollow will also host a 3-mile health walk and a 1-mile fun run (for children ages 7-13). The fun run starts at 8:30 a.m. and the health walk starts at 9 a.m. Awards will be given in age groups in the 5-mile and 1-mile run. Overall winners for both the men and women receive a 2003 family membership to the club (non-transferable). The price is $15 (preregistration) for the 5-mile run and 3-mile health walk (includes T-shirt). Post registration is $20 (includes T-shirt while supplies last), and $5 for the fun run. U.K. Elite Soccer Summer camps for soccer players between 3 and 14 years of age will be held at the following sites: at the Sayreville sports complex July 7-11 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; North Brunswick at Renaissance Park, July 7-11 and Aug. 4-8 from 9 a.m.-noon.; South Brunswick at Constable School, July 14-18 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; Old Bridge at Ticetown Soccer Fields, Aug 11-15 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.; and East Brunswick at Dierdriksen Park, Aug 18-22 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Included in the camp cost is a personal evaluation, a UKE/Reebok T-shirt, and a ball for all participants .

The Spotswood Soccer Club will hold final registration for the fall soccer season this week. Stop by the soccer fields between 5-8 p.m. Wednesday night through Friday night and register for the upcoming season.

The CNJ United, a U12 boys travel soccer team, captured first place in the Premier Division of the Mid New Jersey Youth Soccer Association League. Their record was 8-0-2 with decisive victories over Bridgewater, Cranbury, Edison, Hazlet and the Player Development Academy (PDA). The team members are Gabriel Aquino, Joe Brisindi, Tommy Cahillane, Michael Chiosi, Mohamed Conteh, Greg DeMaio, Nic Giraldo, Ryan Iannuzzo, Sean Lawrence, Dennis Mooney, Tom Parkinson, Petar Pavkovic, Michael Pluta, Mike Salazer and Robbie Van Horn. CNJ United is coached by Art Pluta and Dan Cahillane. CNJ United is affiliated with the Central New Jersey Silver Bullet Soccer Club.

The results of the June 3 Tamarack Amateur Championship were: first low gross was Rita Reisert with 91, second low gross was Chung Hee Lee with a 93, and third low gross was Blenda Langone with 95. First low net was Linda Weintraub with a 76, second low net was Carolyn Meyer with 77, and third was Meryl Abramowitz with 80 low net.

At the June 17 Even Hole/50 percent handicap outing, Rita Reisert won Flight A with 35, followed by Blenda Langone with 36 and Ann Linn with 39. Low putts went to Lelia Nelson with 33. Dot Wright won Flight B with 37.5, followed by Linda Weintraub (m/c) 39.5, and Carol Jankowski (m/c) with 39.6. Low putts to Betty Long with 35. Meryl Abramowitz won Flight C with 38, followed by Jean Ertle with 39 and Janice McElhiney with 44. Low putts to Dot Teringer with 37.

The Monroe Thunder U10 girls softball team opened its travel season last Tuesday night with a 16-6 win over the Edison Angels at home. Brittany Scott pitched a complete game one-hitter with 11 strikeouts en route to the victory. Monroe broke the game open with a 10-run outburst in the fourth inning, with key hits coming from Megan Mascali, Erica Beyer, Brianna Davidson and Leah Castrovince. Courtney Baron was 2-for-2 with four RBIs, and Jenna Giaquinto had a two-run triple in the third inning.

The East Brunswick Cyclones U12 boys soccer team won its flight this season. The boys won their last game in an exciting come-from-behind victory over South Plainfield. The team finished with a 7-1-2 record. The team members are Tim Arnold, Andy Balint, Leo Cordeiro, Shaun Chadhaury, Pat Devito, Dominik Kochon, Kevin Masterton, Dan McAleer, Anthony Nodar, Ryan Norland, Jordan Pease, Zachary Stahl, David Swissman, Jason Tarella, Sagi Telyan, David Wescott and Matt Yu.

The following are the results of the Tamarack Women’s Nine-Hole Golf Association’s June 12 outing. The game played was "Play with the U.S. Open — pick a pro as a partner." Mary Ann Gelsinon (Mike Weir) took first with 36, followed by Terri McAllister (Tiger Woods) with 37, Inge Robinson (Craig Perry) with 38, Sally Hindes (Woods) and Dot Terringer (Perry) with 41, Joyce Nicolaison (Perry) with 42, Fran Poulin (Ernie Els) with 43 and Marge Widder (Woods) with 44. Poulin and Hindes had fewest putts with 15.
