July exhibit focuses
on Etta Helme house

The monthly Helmetta history exhibit for July at the borough Post Office is about Etta Helme’s mansion. The circa-1880s mansion on High Street was once owned by Olivia Antoinette "Etta" Helme, one of the children of George W. Helme and Margaret Appleby Helme. The Appleby and Helme families were connected to the local snuff mill, which closed in 1993, going back to the 1870s.

Etta Helme’s mansion is the last-standing of Helmetta’s three Helme mansions. Over the years, it has served as a private residence, as it is today; a home for the early 20th-century "physical culture" health movement; a home for homeless girls; and an Episcopalian convent.

The monthly history exhibits at the Main Street post office began in March. Information on them is available from Joe Sapia at P.O. Box 275, Helmetta, 08828-0275 or at the e-mail address, Snufftin@aol.com.
