Local 11-year-olds still hope to meet in tourney play

The anticipated backyard brawl in the 11-year-old Invitational Baseball Tournament never materialized last week, much to the dismay of both local teams.

Brick American hoped for a head-to-head matchup with Brick National in the Brick American 11-year-old Invitational Baseball Tournament and upheld its end of the bargain with a 16-0 rout of Lakewood, as Anthony Gearity pitched a no-hitter and smashed three hits for two RBI.

But Brick National dropped a 7-4 verdict to Point Pleasant Boro to fall to 2-1 in the double-elimination tournament.

Manager Ray Mennon’s Brick American club puts its 3-0 record on the line Thursday night at 7 p.m. Brick National played in the losers’ bracket on Monday.

Gearity struck out six and walked one. Brian Jerome came off the bench to hit a two-run homer, and Glen McGinnis had two hits, including a solo home run, and two RBIs. Brian Duckworth batted in two runs and Cody Cutter knocked in another, and each had two hits.

Also contributing run-scoring hits were Drew Atheres, Matt Rogers, Jason Promisel, Mike Brown, Lou Racculia, Ryan Charterina and Andrew Nelson.
