The township Arts Commission is seeking designs for a permanent memorial to victims of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.
Arts Commission members are seeking preliminary drawings of memorials that "encourage reflection and contemplation" and "create a unique and powerful statement of enduring and universal symbolism," according to the commission’s request for design proposals.
"I’m foreseeing a whole range of ideas that could come in," said commission member Fran Nimeck.
Architects, sculptors, designers and artists of various levels of experience may submit preliminary drawings of proposed memorials to the Arts Commission until Dec. 31, Ms. Nimeck said.
Commission members will develop size and cost specifications after receiving more information from township staff, she said.
The commission will choose up to five finalists to submit design models for which they will be paid. Commissioners expect to select one of the five by spring 2004 and to have the monument constructed in the approximately 30-square-foot Sept. 11 memorial garden in front of the municipal building.
Township residents whose relatives died in the Sept. 11 attacks will be invited to review the design submissions, but commissioners will make the final selection.
Local residents Kenneth Ledee, Toyena Skinner and Mukul Agarwala were killed in the attacks.
