Local swimmers excel at conference championships

Editor’s note: Last week’s Sentinel included a story listing the results of the New Jersey Swimming and Diving Conference Championships, held at Frog Hollow Swim and Tennis Club in South Amboy on July 29 and 30. Unfortunately, due to a reporting error, that story included last year’s results. Here, with our apologies, are the correct results from this year’s event.

The two-day New Jersey Swimming and Diving Conference Championships marked the end of the summer season and provided one last chance for the area’s top swimmers to showcase their talents in what is one of the state’s most competitive meets.

The host Frog Hollow team fared well in its home pool, starting with Maureen McKenna, who won the girls’ 9-10 50 freestyle in 33.17, the girls’ 9-10 50-meter backstroke (39.58), and the girls’ 9-10 50-meter butterfly (37.28).

Laura Kucynski also won gold in the women’s 15-18 200 IM (2:41.04), and took second in both the women’s 15-18 200 freestyle (2:22.21), and the women’s 15-18 100 butterfly (1:14.02).

Among the other top finishers for Frog Hollow were: Rachel Abadie, third, girls’ 11-12 50 backstroke and girls’ 11-12 50 butterfly (34.64), and fourth girls’ 11-12 50 freestyle (31.59); Skylar Lutz, third, boys’ 9-10 50 breaststroke (52.41); Shannon McKenna, fourth, girls’ 11-12 50 backstroke (37.98); Stephen Deleo, fourth, boys’ 9-10 50 breaststroke (53.09); Myra Dabowski, third, girls’ 11-12 100 IM (1:18.93) and fourth, girls’ 11-12 50 breaststroke (40.81); Emily Carney, fourth, girls’ 13-14 100 breaststroke (1:28.00); Kim Burkowski, fourth, women’s 15-18 100 breaststroke (1:31.93) and fifth, women’s 15-18 200 freestyle (2:31.64); Audrey Gagnon, fifth, girls’ 11-12 50 backstroke (38.98); and Ashley Noble, sixth, girls’ 9-10 50 breaststroke (49.20).

The girls’ 9-12 200 medley relay team of Maureen McKenna, Myra Dabowski, Rachel Abadie and Becky Beshada also won a gold, finishing in 2:34.61, while the girls’ 9-12 200 freestyle relay team of Shannon McKenna, Ashley Noble, Becky Beshada and Rachel Lutz took sixth (2:37.21).

The East Brunswick Sandpipers, out of the Crystal Springs Aquatic Center, also won their share of medals, starting with Kristen Steenvorden, who won the girls’ 11-12 50 meter breaststroke in 40.32 and the girls’ 11-12 100 IM in 1:14.92.

Overall, the Sandpipers had the most top-six finishes of all local teams. Among those top performers were: Kristen Steenvorden, second, girls’ 11-12 50 freestyle (30.63); Ashley Steenvorden, second, girls’ 11-12 50 breaststroke (40.62), fifth, girls’ 11-12 100 IM (1:22.62) and sixth, girls’ 11-12 50 freestyle (32.46); Scotty Huang, second, boys’ 8-and-under 25 breaststroke (23.81) and, fourth, boys’ 8-and-under 25 butterfly (23.11); Chrissy LeBlon, second, women’s 15-18 100 freestyle (1:04.98); Kylie Sudam, second, girls’ 10-and-under 100 freestyle (1:20.00) and fourth, girls’ 9-10 50 freestyle (36.78); Anthony Steenvorden, third, boys’ 8-and-under 25 breaststroke (26.15); Amalan Krishnamoorthy, third, boys’ 10-and-under 100 freestyle (1:21.03); Katie Zavoda, third, girls’ 13-14 100 breaststroke (1:27.53); Victoria Borbas, third, girls’ 9-10 50 freestyle (36.39), girls’ 9-10 50 butterfly (41.59) and girls’ 10-and-under 100 IM (1:32.09); Omer Hillel, third, girls’ 8-and-under 25 backstroke (23.34); Mia Sorkin, third, girls’ 13-14 100 butterfly (1:18.66) and girls’ 13-14 200 IM (2:53.46); Jenny Zavoda, fourth, girls’ 11-12 100 freestyle (1:09.58), fifth, girls’ 11-12 50 freestyle (31.92) and sixth, girls’ 11-12 100 IM (1:24.40); Kavitha Krishnamoorthy, fourth, girls’ 13-14 100 freestyle (1:09.33) and sixth, girls’ 13-14 200 IM (3:03.31); Tracy A. Lindboe, fourth, girls’ 13-14 200 freestyle (2:31.70); Dan Cahillane, fourth, men’s 15-18 100 breaststroke (1:17.46); Steven Schreyer, fifth, men’s 15-18 100 freestyle (1:01.75) and men’s 15-18 100 backstroke (1:12.41); Nick Ankosko, fifth, boys’ 10-and-under 100 IM (1:40.12) and sixth, boys’ 10-and-under 100 freestyle (1:22.83); Melissa Co, sixth, girls’ 9-10 50 backstroke (47.09); and Christina Huang, fifth, women’s 15-18 200 IM (2:58.75).

The Sandpipers also took the gold in the girls’ 9-12 200 freestyle relay as the team of Jenny Zavoda, Kylie Sudam, Victoria Borbas and Kristen Steenvorden won in 2:15.93. The men’s 13-18 200 freestyle relay team of Steve Schreyer, Aaron Moskovitch, Brian Boyarsky and Dan Cahillane won in 1:54.32.

In addition, the women’s 13-18 200 medley relay team of Kavitha Krishnamoorthy, Katie Zavoda, Mia Sorkin, and Chrissy LeBlon took third (2:23.21), while the women’s 13-18 200 freestyle relay team of Christina Huang, Tracy Lindboe, Asia Higgins and Chrissy LeBlon took fourth in 2:09.54.

The Brookside Swim Club in Milltown had a successful meet led by Ryan Tighe, who won the men’s 15-18 100 meter breaststroke in 1:15.93 and took second in the men’s 15-18 200-meter IM (2:28.22). Colleen Mundorff won the girls’ 11-12 50 freestyle in 30.36 and took second in the girls’ 11-12 100 freestyle (1:05.24) and fourth in the girls’ 11-12 50 butterfly (34.85).

Among the other top finishers from Brookside were: Courtney Catania, third, girls’ 13-14 100 freestyle (1:08.96); Travis Catani, third, boys’ 13-14 100 breaststroke (1:22.08) and boys’ 13-14 200 IM (2:39.99); Tom Waidelich, third, men’s 15-18 100 backstroke (1:10.50), and fifth, men’s 15-18 200 freestyle (2:22.97); Tim Mancuso, fourth, boys’ 13-14 100 back­stroke (1:20.53) and fifth, boys’ 13-14 100 butterfly (1:19.02).

The Brookside men’s 13-18 200 medley relay team of Ryan Tighe, Tom Waidelich, Travis Catani and Tim Mancuso took third (2:11.04).
