EAST BRUNSWICK — A two-car collision on Cranbury Road Friday afternoon resulted in the death of a 32-year-old Englishtown woman.
Lois R. Mitchell was taken off life support early Sunday morning at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, where she had been taken after suffering a severe head injury in the accident on Friday, according to police.
Police said the accident occurred shortly after 3 p.m., when Mitchell, who was driving south on Cranbury Road, tried to turn left but turned directly in front of a vehicle being driven by Ruth M. Walsh, 74, of South River.
Walsh had been heading north on Cranbury Road.
The accident took place in the vicinity of 702 Cranbury Road, near the Pascarella Nursery, but police did not say where the victim was trying to turn into. The matter remains under investigation.
Mitchell was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, police said. She was taken to Robert Wood Johnson by TransMed after the accident.
Walsh, who was wearing a seatbelt, complained of minor chest pain after the accident, according to police, but was not seriously injured.
Both women had been driving mid-sized Pontiacs.
Mitchell, who lived on West Dey Street, was married but had no children, police said.
At press time, no charges had been filed in connection with the accident, which is being investigated by Patrolman Ted Klouser.
