HOWELL — The Howell Police Athletic League (PAL), with the help of the township recreation department, is starting a kickball league on Oct. 3 for disabled children ages 3 and up.

As president of the Howell PAL as well as a national PAL board member, Sgt. Christopher Hill is constantly seeking to develop programs that not only enrich the lives of Howell’s children, but offer opportunities to youngsters who may not get to participate in youth activities.

Hill said the kickball league is being developed to give children with either physical or developmental disabilities the opportunity to play a team sport.

He said children who show up at Oak Glen Park, Old Tavern Road, on Oct. 3 for the 5 p.m. registration will each be paired with a high school student who is active in the PAL through its Homework Enrichment Club or with students enrolled in the Colts Neck High School community service program, Leo’s Club.

Also, Hill said, depending on the turnout, if there are not enough high school students to pair with the number of youngsters who show up to play kickball, police officers will be on hand to team up with them.

Hill said the league will modify the rules of kickball, which he said is "baseball without the bat," in order to accommodate all of the children. He said the league will meet to play starting tomorrow night and continuing each Friday evening until Oct. 24.

Those interested in participating should arrive at Oak Glen Park, which is across the street from police headquarters, at 5 p.m. Oct. 3. There is no fee to participate.
