Baking contest to benefit Holiday Express Oct. 18

Sickles Market, 1 Harrison Ave., Little Silver, will hold an apple pie-baking contest to benefit Holiday Express Oct. 18. The fee is $12 for the contest, which is for amateurs only. Drop-off time is 9-10 a.m. Judging will begin at 2 p.m., and a baking demonstration and book signing by Carole Walter will be at 3:30 p.m.

The event will also feature a "winning pie" auction, with proceeds benefiting Holiday Express. Bakers will receive apples and two glass pie plates. Two pies must be submitted, one for judging and one for the auction. Categories will be "apples only" and "apples plus." Prizes are $250 cash for first place, a $50 Sickles gift certificate for second, and a $25 Sickles gift certificate for third.

The nonprofit Holiday Express volunteers its time and talent to bring live music, toys, clothing, food and fun to children with cancer, people living with AIDS, the mentally ill, disadvantaged families, the isolated elderly, and the homeless during the winter holidays.

Bluegrass concert, jam session set for Oct. 19

United Methodist Church, 49 Church St., Little Silver, will present a bluegrass concert and jam session Oct. 19. The event will feature five live bands. Musicians are invited to bring instruments and take part in the sessions, and light refreshments will be available.

Oceanport’s Community Day slated for Oct. 25

Oceanport will host Community Day Oct. 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Old Wharf Center. The event will feature several volunteer organizations — from youth groups to the senior club — so residents can find out more about the many opportunities available.
