Orchid-growing demonstration planned at Morven

Historic Morven and the Princeton Senior Resource Center will co-sponsor an orchid growing demonstration on Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Suzanne Patterson Center, located behind the Princeton Borough Hall.
Grower Tom Purviance will discuss the history and conservation of orchids, share practical tips on growing them at home, and will have an assortment of his favorites available for purchase. Refreshments will follow the 2 p.m. talk.
Admission is $10. For reservations or information, call Morven at (609) 683-4495.
Prior to his involvement in the orchid profession, Tom Purviance, owner of Parkside Orchids in Ottisville, Pa., was director of Alumni and Development Programs at Westminster Choir College in Princeton. Orchid growing began as a "hobby" with two hundred orchids in his home. The passion continued, and before long he was compelled to build a freestanding greenhouse. More followed until Parkside Orchids had grown to be one of the largest orchid nurseries in the northeastern United States with five greenhouses enclosing 14,000 feet of growing space.
Historic Morven is co-sponsoring the demonstration as part of an educational series of lectures focusing on horticultural topics. The overall mission of Historic Morven, Inc. is to preserve the National Historic Landmark known as Morven and to operate it as a museum and public garden showcasing the cultural heritage of New Jersey.
