Grateful for the care he received from Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank and Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune after suffering a massive heart attack, Sea Bright Councilman William Gelfound has organized — with the help of his wife Ina — a fund-raiser at the Oyster Point Hotel in Red Bank on Saturday, Nov. 15, to benefit the Emergency Departments and Critical Care Units of all three Meridian Health hospitals.

In addition to Riverview and Jersey Shore University medical centers, Meridian operates Ocean Medical Center in Brick.

The $100-per-person fund-raiser begins at 8 p.m. and will include cocktails (with a cash bar), hors d’oeuvres and a buffet, plus musical entertainment. Called "A Celebration of Life," it will honor the physicians and nurses at the three Meridian hospitals. Members of the Sea Bright First Aid Squad will be featured as special honored guests. The First Aid Squad rushed Gelfound to Riverview as he was going into his heart attack. He was then transferred to Jersey Shore.

The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties has issued an urgent appeal for food donations for the upcoming holidays.

It still is far from its goal of having 10,000 turkeys and hams to fill the needs of 230 local food pantries, soup kitchens and other charities throughout the holiday season and the coming months. As of a week ago, it had received only 50 turkeys.

In addition to frozen turkeys and canned or frozen hams, the items most needed by the FoodBank are holiday trimmings such as stuffing, broth or gravy, cranberry sauce, canned fruits and vegetables, pie or muffin mix, beets, yams, instant potatoes, instant pudding, instant gelatin desserts and dry milk, as well as tablecloths, napkins, disposable roasting pans and can openers.

Donations may be dropped off at the FoodBank facility located on Route 66 in Neptune, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., and on (Saturdays) Nov. 8, 15 and 22, from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

Donations can also be left at a number of drop-off points including both Windmills in Long Branch, Grossman’s Deli in the Oakhurst section of Ocean Township, and Ice King in Tinton Falls (nonperishable only).

For further information or directions, call the FoodBank at (732) 918-2600.
