Modell’s Sporting Goods will open a 22,343-square-foot store in Ocean County at the Town & County Shopping Center, 1900 Route 70, Dec. 5. Numerous events are scheduled throughout the weekend to celebrate the 107th Modell’s Sporting Goods store opening, including a Sports Fantasy Sweepstakes in which one winner will receive a trip for two to Dallas, Texas, to see the New York Giants vs. the Dallas Cowboys football game. Other prizes include Modell’s gift certificates, NY Yankees/Modell’s picture frames and lunchboxes, and Modell’s Sporting Goods merchandise, including hats and T-shirts. Grand-opening hours at the new Ocean County store are Dec. 5 and 6 from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and Dec. 7 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Acura of Ocean, Route 35, has donated a 2003 Acura TSX to the Automotive Technology Program at the Brick campus of the Ocean County Vocational Technical School. The car will be used in student training. The Acura donation benefits the automobile industry by helping produce qualified auto technicians for the future, according to Acura of Ocean.

The Brick Township Chamber of Commerce has named the recipients of the 2003 Distinguished Citizens Awards. The honorees are Carol A. Wolfe, Homes Now Inc., and Dottie’s House, for the Distinguished Individual Award; The Brick Township Rotary Club and The Brick Township Morning Rotary Club for the Organizational Award, and "The Brick Communicator" for the Business Award.

According to event Chairwoman Louise Youmans, of Travel Universal, these special people and businesses help the community remember that the care and concern of neighbors is what makes the community, state and country extraordinary.

Capt. Steve D. Nagiewicz of Brick, a commercial dive operator, has been elected secretary of the Ocean County Tourism Advisory Council for 2003-2004. He is joined by Chairwoman Linda K. Stefanik of Dover, a Seaside Park Realtor, and Vice Chairman Steve Steiner of Beach Haven, a producing artistic director at Surflight Theatre.

Nagiewicz is a diving industry consultant, scuba diver and United States Coast Guard licensed master. He owns a commercial dive business in Point Pleasant Beach and is the facility manager of the James J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory at Sandy Hook.

He was recently elected a director in the Shark Research Institute, an international not-for-profit organization based in Princeton. He served as executive director of The Explorers Club in New York City and is a former member of its board of directors and a former fellow of the Royal Geographic Society, England. An author, lecturer and oceanographer, he is an acknowledged industry expert on shipwrecks, scuba diving and the oceans, and is contributing editor to several scuba industry trade magazines.

Dr. David R. Gentile was among 1,442 initiates from around the world who became Fellows of the American College of Surgeons during a ceremony at the college’s 89th annual Clinical Congress held recently in Chicago.

The American College of Surgeons is the largest organization of surgeons in the world. By meeting the college’s membership requirements, Gentile has earned the right to use the designation of F.A.C.S. (Fellow, American College of Surgeons) after his name.

Gentile received a medical doctorate in 1992 from UMDNJ–New Jersey Medical School. He is currently practicing at Professional Orthopaedic Associates, which has three office locations: Tinton Falls, Toms River and Marlboro. In July 2002 he attained board certification from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has a strong professional interest in shoulder, elbow and hand surgery, and holds membership in other professional societies, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Medical Association, New Jersey Orthopaedic Society and the Medical Society of New Jersey.
