Falcon boys bowling team wins GMC tourney opener

   The Monroe High School boys’ bowling team, which finished as co-champions of the White Division in the Greater Middlesex Conference with a 14-2 record, opened play in the GMC Tournament on Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over South River. Teams play a best-of-three series with total pinfall not a factor in the final score.
   The Falcons were scheduled to take on Edison Thursday in the quarterfinals. The semifinals are set for Monday and the championship matches for Wednesday. All action takes place at Brunswick Zone Carolier in North Brunswick.
   After a slow start (losing game one 881-872), the Falcons rolled a 1016 and a 1140 to defeat South River. Eric Wysokowski rolled games of 192-203-267 and Dan Trinkler produced 231-194-255 to lead the Falcons. Gregg Puleio followed a 163 with 205-199 scores and T.J. Van Gorden came through with 136-234-223. Nick Zirkel was consistent with 150-178-196.
   The NJSIAA Central Jersey boys sectionals start at9:30 a.m. on Saturday. The top five teams and top 15individuals from the state’s three sections (North, Central, South) advance to the state finals on Feb.13.
   Monroe’s girls team placed 12th out of 30 teams in Central Jersey in the sectionals last Saturday. The Falcons knocked down 2212 pins.
   Monroe finished regular season play in the GMC White Division with a 9-9 record. The Falcons’ season ended with a 2-0 loss to South Brunswick on Tuesday in the GMC Tournament’s first round.
   In the loss Robyn Grant rolled a 182 in the second game. Kristen Bjornsen had a 158-160.
