Man survives jump from bridge

WOODBRIDGE — A 47-year-old Iselin man attempted to commit suicide by jumping from the Edison Bridge on Route 9 south in Keasbey recently, police said.

According to reports, shortly after 5 p.m. on Friday March 5, police received several calls from passing motorists reporting that a man had jumped from the bridge.

Reports said William Hacker had parked his 2001 Ford truck in the right lane of Route 9 south near the high point of the bridge.

Responding officers observed Hacker lying on the deck of a tug boat covered in blankets.

Tug boat Captain Donald Slosher reported that he and his crew were alerted by people on the top of the bridge yelling and pointing to the water, where Hacker was seen hanging onto some pilings at the base of the bridge.

Hacker was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, and examined for possible internal injuries.
