Sleeping hotel guest reports assault, robbery

EDISON — A man staying at the Red Roof Inn on New Durham Road received a rather rude awakening early Sunday, according to police.

According to reports, a 48-year-old male from South Plainfield was asleep in a room there shortly before 1 a.m. when three black males described as being in their early 20s, wearing dark clothing and skull caps, smashed the front window of the room and reached in to unlock the door. When they were unsuccessful in undoing the second lock, they allegedly kicked the door in, according to police.

The South Plainfield man was repeatedly punched about the face and head, police said, but he received only minor injuries.

The three suspects stole the man’s wallet, reportedly containing $5,000 in cash, and his cell phone and fled on foot.

No weapons were shown or used in the robbery and assault police said.

The incident is currently under investigation.
