Victim fights back in snatch-and-grab

WOODBRIDGE — Police said a robbery victim didn’t give up without a fight April 10.

According to reports, shortly after 7 a.m., two Chinese businessmen staying at the Hilton Hotel on South Wood Avenue in Iselin were loading their luggage into the back of a rental van that an American associate was using to drive them to Newark airport for a flight home.

A man described as Middle-Eastern or South American, 25 to 30 years of age and clean-shaven, approached the rear of the vehicle, took two pieces of luggage and ran to a waiting silver Chrysler van occupied by two other men of similar description.

One of the Chinese men gave chase, pulling the coat and jacket off the thief in the process.

Reports said the victim tried to grab the luggage from out of the Chrysler van, and was dragged a short distance as the suspects fled the parking lot.

The victim suffered minor abrasions to his knees and hands, but refused transport to the hospital, reports said.

One piece of luggage was described as yellow Italian leather, and contained a laptop computer, airline tickets, credit cards, $1,000 in U.S. currency and $3,000 in Chinese currency. The other was blue in color, and contained clothing and airline tickets.

The suspect’s clothing was tagged and placed into evidence. The investigation is ongoing.
