Police nab assault suspect

RED BANK — The borough Police Department received a call from a residence on Leighton Avenue reporting shots being fired July 17.

According to police, the accused, Michael Lane Jr., 24, South Pearl Street, was seen fleeing the scene on his bike as officers responded to the call.

Sgt. Joshua Berbrick and Patrolman David Hicks reported seeing Lane riding a bicycle down Drs. James Parker Boulevard. As they attempted to stop Lane, they said he attempted to flee from them, and, while doing so, discarded a loaded .45-caliber handgun to the ground that was later recovered by police. Lane was then taken into custody.

Further investigation revealed that after an argument, in which Lane allegedly assaulted a female subject, he left the residence.

When outside, Lane allegedly fired three shots into the ground. He then left the area before being apprehended by police.

Lane was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, possession of hollow-point bullets, resisting arrest, and simple assault. Bail was set by in the amount of $30,000. Lane was then remanded to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution, Freehold Township.
