Since the All-Star break, the Metuchen girls U-12 team, participating in the Parkway Invitational Softball League, has won its last two games.

Following the all-star game, in which Valerie Cassell, Megan Lange and Caroline Murphy represented Metuchen, the girls improved their overall record to 5-3.

Playing away in New Providence this past Thursday, the girls won handily by a score of 11-3. Valerie Cassell recorded 12 strikeouts for Metuchen. The girls started the game with a strong first inning, scoring six runs. Eva Rosamilia, Megan Lange, Olivia Black, Murphy, Emilee Frey, Katie Hamilton, Katie Franklin and Holly Anne Rebovich all singled for Metuchen.

Playing against Berkeley Heights the next day, the girls won a close game, 15-14. Megan Lange (two strikeouts) and Murphy (three strikeouts) shared pitching responsibilities for Metuchen. Katie Franklin put in a strong effort covering first base, while Nicole Goldhammer supported the outfield in center field. Again, the girls started the game with a strong first inning, scoring six runs. In a game that changed leads several times, the Metuchen girls had to rely on their hitting and base running to hang on to the lead. Rosamilia and Black executed great sacrifice bunts to help the cause. In all, eight girls scored for Metuchen, including, Lange, Rosamilia, Olivia Black, Murphy, Frey, Vickie Nye, Rebovich and Hamilton, who scored the winning run.

also finishes strong

The Metuchen U-10 Parkway softball team finished its season last week with two wins, finishing with a 4-5 overall record.

In Westfield July 20, Metuchen went out with a bang, winning 20-11. Scoring seven runs in the first inning, Metuchen took the lead and never looked back. Fallon Melillo smacked in four RBIs, with Alyssa Campisi and Felicia Czochanski each adding three. Katie Perullo and Kacey Herrity both knocked in two. The Metuchen bats were flying with Cassandra Black and Perullo pounding out two hits apiece.

Defensive efforts were stellar. Pitcher Campisi had 10 strikeouts. Trish Franklin, Campisi and Perullo combined on a 7-6-2 inning-ending play at the plate to nail down the game.

Playing at home against Berkeley Heights last Thursday, Metuchen came out ahead 7-6 in a close game that could have gone either way. Perullo earned the win by striking out eight, while Campisi earned the save by closing out the final two innings and fanning six.

Down by four in the first inning, Jessica Lange belted a bases-clearing triple, with Alex Gassaway adding a hit and RBI. Joscelyn Poll knocked out two hits, while Kathryn Pirro and Jennie Perullo both had singles.

Cassandra Black had two hits, one of which ended the game in Metuchen’s favor. She blasted the game-winning hit in the fourth inning, sending Herrity in for the go-ahead run.

Tough defensive plays by Katelyn Forte, Melillo and Gassaway helped keep Metuchen in the lead for the final game of the season.
