Local swimmers excel at A League Championships

The New Jersey Swimming and Diving A League Championships were held over the weekend at Frog Hollow Swim Club in South Amboy, where a number of local swimmers distinguished themselves with top finishes.

While the Cranford Gators won the team championship with 265 points, the Crystal Springs Sandpipers from East Brunswick came in second with 218.5 points.

The South Plainfield Tiger Sharks were third (207), followed by Roycefield Rapids (205), Metuchen Municipal Pool (173), the Brookside Swim Club of Milltown (163), host Frog Hollow (146.5), Nob Valley Swim Club of North Brunswick (145), Hillsborough YMCA (115) and Cedar Hill Swim Club (110).

The top six finishers in each event scored points for their teams, with the first-place finisher providing seven team points, and the sixth-place finisher earning a single point.

The Frog Hollow team was led by Katie Tice, who won the girls 15-18 100 backstroke in 1:14.19; and the girls 13-18 200-meter medley relay team of Katie Tice, Rachel Lutz, Rachel Abadie and Kim Bukowski, who won in 2:17.27.

Taking second-place honors for the South Amboy team were Myra Dabkowski (girls 13-14 100 breaststroke, 1:24.79); Rachel Abadie (girls 13-14 100 butterfly, 1:15.54); Jessica Besnar (girls 15-18 100 butterfly, 1:14.44); Stephen Deleo (boys 9-10 50 breaststroke, 50.08); Matthew Zebrowski (boys 8U 25-meter butterfly, 21.06); and the girls 13-18 200-meter freestyle relay team of Jessica Besnar, Myra Dabkowski, Aubrey Deleo and Katie Tice (2:05.34).

Frog Hollow had a number of third-place finishers, including Bob Besnar (boys 13-18 200 individual medley, 2:28.04, boys 13-18 200 freestyle, 2:09.96, and boys 15-18 100 free, 59.07); Rachel Abadie (girls 13-14 100-meter freestyle, 1:06.95); Matthew Zebrowski (boys 8U 25 freestyle, 19.84); Luke McNally (boys 9-10 50 free, 37.69); Ross Masterson (boys 11-12 100 free, 1:21.41); Mike Astarita (boys 8U 25-meter backstroke, 26.14); and the boys 8U 100-meter freestyle relay team of Mike Astarita, Patrick Astarita, Erik Beshada and Matthew Zebrowski (1:33.02).

Earning the two points for fourth-place finishes for Frog Hollow were Kim Bukowski (girls 15-18 100 breaststroke, 1:30.62); Mike Astarita (boys 8U 25 free, 20.17); Ross Masterson (boys 11-12 50 free, 35.12); Ashley Noble (girls 11-12 50-meter breaststroke, 45.26); Luke McNally (boys 10U 100 free, 1:29.35, and boys 9-10 50-meter butterfly, 46.64); ); and the boys 8U 100-meter medley relay team of Patrick Astarita, Erik Beshada, Matthew Zebrowski and Mike Astarita (1:53.79).

Recording fifth-place finishes for Frog Hollow were Jessica Besnar (girls 13-18 200 freestyle, 2:27.31); Stephen Deleo (boys 9-10 50 free, 39.80); and the boys 9-12 200-meter medley relay team of Stephen Deleo, Skyler Lutz, Luke McNally and Ross Masterson (3:10.83).

The following swimmers were also rewarded a point for Frog Hollow for earning sixth-place finishes: Rachel Lutz (girls 13-18 200 IM, 2:49.36); Jessica Besnar (girls 15-18 100 free, 1:08.03); Rachel Abadie (girls 13-18 200 free, 2:27.77); Chris Hamersky (boys 9-0 50 free, 41.24); Nicholas Colatrella (boys 8U 25-meter breaststroke, 30.52); the boys 9-12 200-meter freestyle relay team of Kyle Krzyanowski, Jack O’Leary, Jonathon Bloodgood and John Inman (3:15.60); and the boys 13-18 200-meter freestyle relay team of Robbie Masterson, Ryan Behr, Jesse Stone and Bob Besnar (2:08.38).
