The Teicher Organization, East Brunswick, has announced the appointment of John Robert "Jake" Watkins II as its new general counsel. The Little Falls resident possesses more than 10 years’ experience as a real estate attorney, and will be responsible for litigation, negotiation, drafting residential and commercial real estate contracts, and handling government regulatory matters. Prior to joining Teicher, Watkins served as general counsel for Sussex and Warren Holding Corporation. He received his law degree at Widener University School of Law, Chester, Pa., and his bachelor of arts degree at St. Anselm College, Manchester, N.H. A residential and commercial developer, The Teicher Organization is developing projects in New Jersey and New York.

Proskate USA, South Brunswick, recently the inaugural "Score 1 for Literacy" fund-raiser to benefit the nonprofit New Jersey Reads, which works to eradicate illiteracy in New Jersey. New Jersey Devil defenseman Ken Daneyko took part in the event, which included an ice hockey tournament for 8- and 9-year-old league players and raised more than $1,200. Daneyko met with more than 150 children and parents, and spoke about the importance of reading, self-confidence and following dreams. Daneyko’s visit and the tournament were coordinated by Andy Rosengard, East Brunswick, a volunteer ice hockey coach and founder of the nonprofit Envision Success, provides educational, motivational and goal-setting programs for children. Rosengard’s son also played in the tournament.

SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) and the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC), North Branch section of Branchburg, have formed a partnership to offer programs to help business owners minimize their obstacles and maximize their potential.

A total of six workshops/seminars have been scheduled for fall. Two of the workshops will be offered jointly by the SBDC and SCORE, and four will be provided by SCORE alone.

The schedule is as follows:

• Sept. 18 — "Personal Financial Planning for Business Owners, Graduates and Young Families," sponsored by SCORE, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at RVCC, $25;

• Sept. 23 — "How to Buy a Business or Franchise," sponsored by SCORE, 7-9 p.m. at RVCC, $25;

• Oct. 2 — "Starting and Staying in Business," co-sponsored by SCORE and the SBDC, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at RVCC, $25;

• Oct. 12 — "Secrets of Online Business Research," co-sponsored by SBDC and SCORE, 1-4 p.m. at RVCC, $30;

• Nov. 4 — "Creating a Winning Sales Plan," sponsored by SCORE, 7-9 p.m. at the college, $25;

• Nov. 11 — "How to Buy a Business or Franchise," sponsored by SCORE, 7-9 p.m. at the Franklin Education Center, Somerset section of Franklin, $25.
