‘Jazz & Jam’

concert set

for Aug. 28

PLUMSTED — A "Big Band Jazz & Jam" concert will take place Aug. 28 at the New Egypt High School auditorium, Evergreen Road.

The third concert in Plumsted’s series of free summer concerts will feature the music from the Lakewood Jazz Ensem-ble, a 22-piece jazz band comprised of musicians who have been playing together for 20 years.

The band is under the direction of Wilbur Wittemann, who has conducted bands and performed with world famous musicians and orchestras such as Dizzy Gillespie, Maynard Ferguson, Louis Bellson and many more.

Wittemann is well known in the local area for his many orchestras, as well as for being the current director of bands and director of jazz studies at Georgian Court University, Lakewood.

Student and adult musicians are invited and encouraged to learn the art of improvisation by jamming with the professionals in the band for one hour prior to the concert.

Instrumentalists will be split into small groups by instrument type to review and learn the art of improvisation. After a short warm-up time, everyone will meet back on stage to jam together. Anyone of any age may participate by calling (609) 758-2241, ext. 144 to register for the jam session.

The jam session will be held from 12:30-2 p.m., and the jazz concert will take place from 2:30-4 p.m. Light refreshments will be sold.
