H.S. teen participates in

summer science program

Swarup Swaminathan of Howell joined other high school students from all over New Jersey in the month-long New Jersey Governor’s School of the Sciences at Drew University, Madison, which began July 18 and concluded Aug. 14. This summer, 93 pupils studied science at Drew under the guidance of university faculty.

Started in 1983 by then-Gov. Thomas H. Kean, who is now president of Drew University, the program is structured to meet the educational needs of artistically and academically talented high school students who have completed their junior year.

In addition to the sciences, programs are held in five other areas: public issues, the arts, the environment, international studies and engineering. With typically 2,400 applications, about 625 students are admitted each year to the six different programs.

The four-week session is a full scholarship program that includes tuition, room and meals. Applicants must have at least a B average in academic courses; should rank in the 90th percentile or higher on any standardized tests they have taken; and must also demonstrate high ability in math through strong PSAT/SAT scores.
